The area
Indialantic and Melbourne Beach share the barrier island south of the causeways, with the ocean on one side and the Indian River Lagoon on the other. About 39% of homes here were built before 1980, and most are owner occupied.
The island has a lot of what roof rats like: tall palms, sea grape, citrus and older roof lines. Termites matter less here in our records than on the mainland, but rodents matter more.
Local tips and warnings
About 20% of the homes we look after here have rodent work, about 2 times the Brevard rate. Our rodent calls county wide climb through summer and peak in August.
Roof rats get in through gaps where the roof meets the wall, around vents, and at loose soffits. A gap the size of a quarter is enough. Our free inspection checks the whole roof line.
In our records, termite work is much less common here than on the mainland. Still, watch for small pellet piles from drywood termites, especially in older wood trim.
Pest calendar
Our busiest months for everyday pests are August and September, when the summer rains drive ants and roaches indoors. Rodent work climbs through the summer and peaks in August. Termites swarm in two waves: native subterranean termites in daylight from late winter into spring, and Formosan termites on warm evenings in late spring and early summer.

The homes
Older homes tend to have more gaps for pests to use and less termite protection left. Newer homes often still trust a builder's termite treatment that has already worn off. Here is how the housing breaks down, from the US Census.

About these numbers. Our figures come from Gator Pest Control's own service records from 2024 on. We count homes, not visits, and round them. Any group under 5 homes is left out, and no customer, street or job is ever shown. Housing figures are from the US Census Bureau, ACS 2024 5-year American Community Survey. ZIP outlines are Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. Termite swarm timing follows University of Florida IFAS extension guidance.
