For a regular pest control visit, no. You can stay home. So do I have to leave the house during pest control? Not in Brevard County, not for the interior and exterior work on a normal plan. Stay out of the room being treated, keep kids and pets off treated spots until they are dry, and that is it.
TL;DR
- You can stay home for a normal pest control visit. Most of the work is outside anyway.
- Stay out of the room being treated, then stay off the treated spots until they are dry. Usually that is an hour or two.
- Anyone with asthma, a pregnancy or a newborn in the house should plan to be out for a few hours. Tell us when you book.
- You do not need to be home for an exterior visit. Someone has to let us in for interior work.
- A tent fumigation or a whole house flea treatment is a different job. You are told in advance.
What actually happens on a normal visit
Most of a regular visit happens outside. We treat the perimeter of the house and the entry points pests use, and on the Silver and Gold plans the eaves and soffits too. The general pest control page lists what each plan covers.
Inside, the work is small and aimed. Baseboards, under the sinks, around the plumbing, the spots where ants or roaches come in. Baits go deep inside cabinets or up high, never on an open shelf. Nothing gets fogged. The EPA says pesticides should go only on targeted locations, not sprayed over a whole room, and that is how a good company works.
There is no cloud in the air. There is a thin treated edge along the wall, and it needs time to dry.
Do I have to leave the house during pest control? Who should step out, and for how long
While we treat a room, be in a different room, or out on the lanai. When we are done, the rule is the one the EPA gives: keep children, toys and pets away until the pesticide has dried. In most Melbourne homes that works out to an hour or two. Humidity and the AC change it, and your technician will tell you when a spot is ready.
Some people should plan to be out of the house for a few hours, not just out of the room:
- Anyone with asthma or another breathing problem.
- Anyone pregnant, and any home with a newborn.
This is not medical advice. If you are not sure, ask your doctor, and tell us when you book. We can do the outside only that visit.
Birds and reptiles are the pets to think about. Take birds out of the house during interior work. Cover a reptile or fish tank and turn off the pump until everything is dry. We covered this in is pest control safe for pets and kids.
Do I need to be home at all?
For an exterior visit, no. We work around the outside and leave a note of what we did. Snowbirds in Palm Bay and Viera keep exterior service going while they are up north.
For interior work, someone has to let us in. We also like you there. It is easier to show you where the ants come in than to write it on a slip.
When you really do have to leave
A few jobs make leaving part of the job, and you know in advance:
- Tent fumigation for drywood termites. The whole house is sealed and gassed. You are out for days, with plants and pets.
- Whole house flea treatment. Floors and carpets get treated, so everyone stays out until it is dry.
If somebody tells you to clear out for a regular ant or roach visit, ask why. A good answer names the product and the reason. "Just to be safe" is not a reason.
What we see in Brevard
We ask about pets, kids and health before we start, every visit. Then we work outside first, so by the time we come inside there is not much left to treat.
The other thing we see: people worry about the visit, then mop the baseboards the next morning and wash the treatment off. A few more bugs in the days after is normal. See why you see more bugs after a treatment. Sweep them up and leave the edges alone.
What to do now
- Tell us who lives there when you book. Pets, kids, anyone with asthma or a pregnancy. We plan the visit around it.
- Clear the edges. Pull pet bowls, toys and anything stored under the sinks. Cover the fish tank.
- Pick a room. Decide where you and the kids will be while we treat inside. The lanai works well.
- Ask two questions. What was treated, and when is it dry.
- Stay off treated spots until dry, then live normally. Ask before you mop along the treated baseboards.
When to call somebody
If you have put off pest control in Melbourne FL because you thought it meant clearing out the family for a day, it does not. Ask what the visit involves and who should step out. A company that cannot answer in plain words is the wrong company. Our plans are on the pricing page, with no contract.
