How Often Should You Get Pest Control in Florida?

A pest control technician with a clipboard checking the base of a stucco wall beside a mulch bed at a Florida home with palm trees, part of deciding how often you should get pest control

For most Florida homes, every three months is enough. Every two months makes sense when bugs keep showing up between visits. So how often should you get pest control? In Brevard County, start with every three months and only go more often if the house tells you it needs it.

TL;DR

  • Every three months (quarterly) is the normal schedule for a typical Florida home.
  • Every two months fits a house with heavy plants, water nearby, or bugs that come back between visits.
  • Monthly service is mostly for restaurants or a bad active problem, and usually only for a short stretch.
  • Termites and rodents run on their own schedule. They are not part of a regular bug visit.
  • A schedule only works if the reasons pests come in get fixed too.

Why Florida homes need a schedule at all

Up north, a cold winter knocks pests back every year. We do not get that here. Ants, roaches and spiders stay busy all twelve months in Brevard County, so a house that is clean in March can have a trail across the counter by June.

A regular visit is not about spraying more. It is about looking again. The EPA calls this integrated pest management: inspect, figure out which pest you have, and stop it from coming back. A technician who sees your house every few months notices the new gap under the door or the leak under the sink before it turns into a real problem.

That is the whole point of a schedule. Catch it small.

How often should you get pest control? Quarterly vs every two months

Here is how I would think about it.

Every three months works when:

  • You see a bug now and then, not every week.
  • The yard is kept up, with mulch and shrubs pulled back from the walls.
  • There is no pond, canal or thick woods right behind the house.

Every two months works better when:

  • Bugs show up again well before the next visit.
  • The house backs up to a retention pond, the river, or a wooded lot.
  • There is heavy landscaping, lots of mulch beds, or plants touching the house.
  • You have had ghost ants or white footed ants before. Ghost ants have many queens and split off new colonies, according to UF/IFAS, so they take steady work.

Our plans follow that same line. The pricing page lists Bronze every two months and Silver and Gold every three months. There is no contract on any of them, so you can change the schedule if it turns out wrong.

Is monthly pest control worth it?

For most homes, no. Monthly visits make sense for a restaurant, or for a house with a heavy German roach problem that needs knocking down fast. Once that problem is under control, most homes can drop back to a normal schedule.

If someone tells you a regular house needs monthly service forever, ask them why. A good answer names a pest and a reason. "Florida has a lot of bugs" is not a reason.

Termites and rodents run on their own clock

A regular pest visit covers the bugs that walk in: ants, roaches, spiders and the like. It is not the same job as termites or rats.

  • Termites. Most Florida homes get termite protection as its own service, often with a bond and a yearly check. Our Gold plan includes an annual termite assessment. See termite control for how that works.
  • Rodents. Rats need their way in found and sealed, then trapping. That is a one time project, not a monthly spray. Our rodent control page explains it.

What we see in Brevard

Roof rats come into Melbourne attics from the trees. Ghost ants and white footed ants show up in kitchens and bathrooms. Snowbird homes sit closed for months, and that gives pests a quiet stretch to move in.

That last one matters for scheduling. If you are gone half the year, do not skip the visits while you are away. The house still gets checked, and you do not come home to a surprise. We wrote about that in opening a snowbird home.

What to do now

  1. Count what you see. For two weeks, write down every bug inside the house: what, where and when.
  2. Look at the outside. Mulch against the wall, shrubs touching the house, and water near the slab all push you toward every two months.
  3. Start at every three months if the list is short and the yard is in good shape.
  4. Move to every two months if bugs come back well before the next visit.
  5. Handle termites and rodents on their own. Get a termite inspection, and get any attic noise checked.

When to call somebody

If you are not sure which schedule fits, ask for a look. A first visit should tell you what pests you have and why, not just sell you a plan. Our estimate is free, there is no contract, and you can change the schedule later if your house needs something different.
