Florida’s warm, humid climate makes it one of the most pest-active states in the country. Many infestations begin unnoticed and grow quietly until damage or health risks become obvious. Early identification is the key to preventing costly problems.
Common Signs of Pest Activity
Most pests leave behind clues before you ever see them directly. These signs typically fall into four categories: visual sightings, droppings, sounds, and physical damage.
Roaches
Visual signs: Live or dead roaches, especially at night or when lights turn on
Droppings: Small black specks resembling ground pepper
Other clues: Musty odors, shed skins, egg cases in cabinets or behind appliances
Ants
Visual signs: Lines or clusters of ants along walls, countertops, or baseboards
Droppings: Fine debris near entry points or nests
Other clues: Small soil piles near cracks, windows, or pavers
Rodents (Rats and Mice)
Visual signs: Sightings at night, grease marks along walls
Droppings: Small, dark pellets in attics, garages, or pantries
Sounds: Scratching or scurrying in walls or ceilings
Damage: Chewed wires, insulation, or stored food
Termites
Visual signs: Mud tubes along foundations or walls
Droppings: Small piles of pellet-like frass (drywood termites)
Damage: Hollow-sounding wood, warped doors, bubbling paint
Silverfish
Visual signs: Fast-moving, silver insects in bathrooms or kitchens
Damage: Holes in paper, books, wallpaper, or clothing
Other clues: Typically found in damp, dark areas
Why Early Detection Matters
Catching pest activity early allows for targeted treatment, reduced damage, and lower costs. Many pests multiply rapidly in Florida conditions, making delays expensive and disruptive.
